Convergence Church

About Us

Because of the Gospel we are a church seeking to live out our identity as FAMILY, MISSIONARIES, and SERVANTS.
Pastor Scott Torres
Hello, I'm Pastor Scott. Thank you for reading my bio. I was awakened to the beauty of Jesus in the summer of 1995. I was lost, broken, and afraid. I can honestly say I had no hope. But then out of no where, what my soul longed for I found in a relationship with Him. My life has never been the same since. If you ever want to talk about this please feel free to reach out.

I am married to Andrea and together we have four rambunctious children known as the Killer B's (Boston, Bryce, Bailey, and Brooks). Outside of the triune God (who gives us life, breath, and all things), my family is the best thing that has happened to me.

I was born on a military base in Nuremberg, Germany and have lived in several states. I attended Valdosta State University (the Harvard of the South) and majored in Communications. Afterward I went on to receive my M.Div from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary.

I have served the local church in various settings since 2000. I enjoy eating all things chocolate, drinking coffee, coaching, and taking Andrea dancing wherever there is good music and good food!
Pastor Jade Stanford
I was saved by the transforming power of Christ at the age of nine. I am married to Jennifer, and we have six children – Claire, Ethan, Blythe, Owen, Evelyn, and Phinehas. Amy Bumpass and her son, Omar Parker, also live with us, and we've grafted them into the Stanford Family tree!

I have been involved in Christian ministry for over 20 years. I've served in the roles of worship minister, deacon, missional community leader, teacher, and elder. Jennifer and I take great joy in counseling, in discipleship, and in showing hospitality. I'm thankful to be able to directly minister to my community through our auto repair business as well.

One scripture that is especially meaningful to me is Colossians 3:1-3, which says, "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God."

For fun I like to work out with my local F3 group, ride dirt bikes, listen to podcasts, and hang out with my family.
Pastor Jonathan DeVore
My name is Jonathan DeVore and I am grateful to be one of the Pastors at Convergence Church. I grew up regularly attending church with my family, but it wasn't until later in my life that Jesus saved me. I went through challenging times as a teen and young adult and sought my identity in things of this world. In 2006, God radically saved me. He removed the scales from my eyes and showed me my desperate need for Him.

The Lord has blessed me with a beautiful, Godly wife Bethany and two wonderful children, Elleanor and Elias. I enjoy spending time with family, good food (especially sushi!), movies, working out, travelling, hiking and sporting clays. I am a Carolina Panthers fan, but my favorite team is the Gators from my home state of Florida.

My family and I love being a part of the body at Convergence Church. Our spiritual growth has increased exponentially since we began attending Convergence at its inaugural Sunday at Frank Liske Park. Convergence Church firmly believes that each member is a servant missionary called by God to live life on life, life on mission and life in community together. I can attribute much of my spiritual growth to these foundation beliefs. I also love the heart of our congregation at Convergence Church that is not only committed to serving God but also serving one another.
Pastor Carl Wood
I was blessed to be born into a Christian home in east Tennessee, to a godly mother & father who raised me in the nurture & admonition of the Lord. In 1997 I married Rebecca, whom I had met at a Christian university in South Carolina. 2 years later after earning a degree in pharmacy, we moved to Charlotte. In the years since, God has blessed us with 5 children (Andrew, Anna, Alexa, Adam, & Audrey).

God has shown His faithfulness to us & taught us to trust Him in many ways, none more so than through the joys & challenges of raising a disabled child. If you meet Audrey (& I hope you do!), she won't be able to speak to you; but if you'll let her, she'll likely give you the biggest hug you've ever had! I enjoy studying the Bible & discussing hard topics. When I need some down time, you'll likely find me at home with friends and family, playing a game or watching a movie.
Pastor Brian Ottinger
Grace and Peace,
My name is Pastor Brian. After 32 hard years of living life "my way", the Lord rescued me by His Grace and for His Glory in 2010. Since then, I have sought to live my life for Him. God has burdened me to bring His restoration to the hurting and to help equip the church for the mission of God.

Next to a relationship with Christ, my relationship with my beautiful wife is the one I treasure the most. The Lord has also blessed me with five of the coolest people I know, my sons. I love time with my family; I love to travel, listening to hip hop, folk and reggae music, I also enjoy watching the Braves, Hornets and Panthers.

Thanks for checking out our website. On behalf of myself and our family we want to invite you to experience life in Christ. Hope to see you soon.

At Convergence Church our mission is not arbitrary; it is a mission given to us by our Father who has revealed Himself through His Son Jesus Christ, who teaches and leads us through the Holy Spirit. Scroll down to see some of the crucial beliefs which shape our mission and set apart our Family of Servant Missionaries.
We are focused on Scripture, Discipleship, and Mission.
Scripture (Knowing God): We look to God's Word alone as our final rule and authority for faith and practice.
Discipleship (Growing in God): By the power of the Holy Spirit and through the means of the local church, we believe that we are called to be more like Jesus every day.
Mission (Going with God): As we grow in learning and applying God's Word, we go forth into the world to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, making disciples of all the nations and teaching them all that He has commanded.

Convergence Church is built upon a vision and mission to impact our communities with the Gospel through Spirit-filled discipleship and fellowship. In order to protect the future of this vision and promote unity around it, we feel it is necessary to produce a concise Statement of Faith outlining the essentials and distinctives of Convergence Church. The essentials are the "non-negotiables" on which we stand as Christians, making them crucial to the vision of the church. The distinctives are important doctrines which help form and shape the identity of Convergence Church. Therefore, a lack of unity in these doctrines is detrimental to carrying out our mission. We do ask that those who covenant with us would not be divisive about these things, but rather approach them in a spirit of unity, love, and submission.

Please read this document carefully and prayerfully. More than just a checklist of beliefs, this document attempts to capture our vision, and if you are to covenant with us, we want you to share the vision as well. If you have any differences or issues with any part of the stated beliefs below, we would be glad to discuss these things with you; just go to our Contact page and let us know!

Essential Doctrines

1. God – There is one perfect, eternal God who created everything. He exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; Deut. 6:4; John 8:58; John 1:1; Matt. 3:16-17)

2. Man – God created mankind in His image for His glory. At creation, man and woman lived in a perfect relationship with God. However, they rejected God by disobeying Him. As a result, their sin earned eternal death and separation from God for themselves and all mankind. (Gen. 2-3)

3. Salvation – In God's great love, His plan for reconciling sinful man to Himself was Jesus Christ. Jesus, who was fully God and fully man, accomplished our salvation through His perfect life, death, and resurrection. Through faith alone in Jesus alone, we are saved and have our relationship restored back to God. Our faith in Christ leads us to a life of repentance, turning away from sin to follow Jesus instead. (Gen. 3:15; Heb. 10:10; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Pet. 3:9; Matt. 16:24)

4. Church – Once a person has been saved they are now a member of the church, God's family. The church exists to bring Glory to God by making disciples and building His Kingdom. God's mission is best accomplished when Christians are working together in unity through the local church, instead of in isolation. Once this mission is fulfilled, Jesus will return for His Church. (Rom. 8:15; 1 Cor. 12:13-20; Matt. 28:18-20; Heb. 10:24-25; Matt 24:14)

5. Scripture – All Scripture was given by inspiration of God through man and is without error. It is our ultimate authority, under which we all submit, and with which we edify one another. (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21)

Convergence Church Distinctives

1. God – God the Father adopts us into His family. God the Son came not to be served but to serve. As adopted sons of God we are now called to serve as Jesus served, laying down our lives to serve Him as He has served us. We believe the Holy Spirit is active and working to empower God's people. No single spiritual gift is evidence of salvation but is given by God for the edification of the Church and the furtherance of the Gospel.

2. Man – Because Man is born in sin, he is unable to do anything to save himself. Thus, it is a complete work of God to save man, and man can take no credit for his salvation.

3. Salvation – In God's great mercy and love, He freely chooses whom He will save and seals their salvation for all eternity.

4. Church –
  • Our priority at Convergence Church is fulfilling the Great Commission, to make disciples and build His Kingdom. We will accomplish this by obeying the Great Commandments, to love God and love our neighbors.
  • Each member of the church has been uniquely gifted by God for the mission. Every person at Convergence Church is encouraged to give sacrificially of our time, talents and treasure to help advance the Gospel in every area of influence. We will seek to faithfully steward all provisions the Lord supplies, and everything we do, including our preferences, will be in submission to His Mission and to the "one-anothers" of Scripture.
  • The church is not a building, rather it is a community of God's people equipping one another to live on mission in everyday life. (Work, School, Home, etc.) To faithfully serve this model, the Convergence church body is highly encouraged to participate in a weekly, family-integrated Sunday gathering of all the saints, a bi-weekly discipleship group meeting, and weekly Missional Community meeting in which members invite their communities into life in Christ.
  • Scripture instructs our regular meetings to include expository preaching and teaching of God's Word, administering the Lord's Supper, Baptism by immersion, music worship (not limited by style or instrumentation) as well as church discipline.
  • Every member of the local body is responsible to address sin according to the Scriptures, in love and submission to one another, and under the guidance of the elders.
  • Jesus Christ is the head of the church, and has given authority of leadership to a plurality of elders/pastors, who are affirmed by and accountable to the congregation. In addition, each member of Convergence church is competent for ministry and called to minister to one another through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Men and women are created equally and are shared recipients in the empowerment of the Spirit for ministry. The husband sacrificially leads his family in the home, and elders sacrificially lead the body in the church. The office of elder/pastor is restricted to men.
